Our Trip to Sheffield

Hi all!

Well what a couple of weeks it has been. We decided to catch up on the 18/04 with my cousin Omar his girlfriend Yasha in Sheffield on a last minute whim.

First big lesson leant here. You need to book any travel as far in advance as possible. The prices skyrocket the closer that you get to your travel date. We paid £60 each to travel return on the train (about 2 ½ hours North from London). We found out that the same trip could have been done for 20 pounds if we had booked 3 weeks prior. The same goes for the planes and everything else. Oh well the journey was smooth…

We arrived in Sheffield to find that there was heaps of police patrolling the station after a local soccer derby. These English lads are passionate about their footy! Luckily there was no trouble.
After some fantastic Dim Sum at a local restaurant we headed back to a pub called ‘The Earl’. It has a great underground dance scene and has seen some of the greatest dance and rock acts in the UK. The Arctic Monkeys are from Sheffield and have played there a few times.

We headed out to see the city the next day. There wasn’t really much to see in the city, but was worth a look. We found out afterwards that they have a shopping centre there that has over 270 shops! It is one of the biggest in Europe. Lucky Nat didn’t find out this earlier!!!

In the afternoon my cousin and girlfriend picked us up to have a look at the Peak district which separates Sheffield from Manchester. This area has a lot of history dating back to the 15th century. Little John of Robin Hood fame was buried here and we even got to see his grave! For miles and miles just stack rock fences and green pastures. Absolutely spectacular scenery. We went to a couple of pubs in the area to try the local grub and ales. This one pub ‘The Castle’ was awesome. Still is an inn, with accommodation, hidden away in this little village. It looks up at a castle from hundreds of years ago.

On the way back we saw this beautiful old castle (Chatsworth House). Unbelievable spot! The property must about 200 acres. Words cannot describe how grandous this was! Hopefully the photo will do it justice

Well we went back for a quiet night back at the pub with a few of the locals over a pint. I love the pints here! It is about £2.50 for a pint. Works out about $6.50 AUD Even for the premium beers!

We headed back to London the next day with some fond memories (especially of Omar and Jasia's hospitality!) and some spectacular scenery to reminisce over.

Well that’s it for the Sheffield. Coming up the adventure that was the ANZAC trip to Turkey.

ps - As you can see we can now upload pictures in the Blog. We will try to put a couple into each of them..
